Tuning in / tuned out.

Most of my life when listening to music I've tended to take in the music but not the words. Years ago a professional singer I knew asked me my opinion of her latest song. I said I liked the sound of it. When she asked me about the lyrics I said honestly 'I've no idea' and she was unimpressed with that. Has anyone else experienced similar with music and/or other things? I'm watching some 1980s music videos, some of which I liked at the time. I'm able to take in (without trying too hard) the lyrics too now which is refreshing and like a new experience of the same thing, funnily enough Slight smile

  • I'm another one that tends to focus more on the music than the lyrics. I'm hopeless at remembering lyrics unless they're the lyrics to a well-known song. Even then, I might only remember the chorus.

As I've aged, I have noticed that I mishear lyrics, as there seems to be a tendency for some vocalists to mumble, or else sing the lyrics far too quickly. Sometimes this can cause me much amusement, especially when I discover years later that what I thought I'd heard (lyrics-wise) was completely wrong.

Quite often, if I want to know the lyrics to a song, I'll end up searching for them on the internet. Having said that, they aren't always completely accurate.

  • For decades I thought the lyrics in The Pretenders' 'Brass in pocket' were "Got moose cack,so reet", when it was "Got new skank, so reet".

  • I've had quite a lot of that kind of thing over the years too Sweat smile In the 80s I especially liked Queen (and nearly but not quite joined their official fanclub) and thought at the end of One Vision he said 'white chicken'. I see now that he does actually say 'fried chicken' (as Wikipedia explains: '  The final line of the song (in the studio, live, and "Blurred Vision" versions, in the album and extended versions the line before the final "God works in mysterious ways... Mysterious ways...") is "fried chicken", although the lyrics say "one vision". This was the result of trying to come up with the proper wording of the song, and since it was not working, Freddie Mercury at some point introduced words that had nothing to do with the song for fun, as suggested by his partner, Jim Hutton. Some other made-up words during rehearsals were "one shrimp, one prawn, one clam, one chicken" and some profanity.') Thumbsup
