types of benefits for Autism and ADHD

just a quick question, i’m trying to work out what types of benefits I could claim when I am in england for autism and adhd (if any, I have no idea how it works), as I definitely won’t be able to work in the next few months as i’m recently diagnosed and starting therapy and medication and getting my mental health back in check.
Would anyone know by any chance which services I should contact?

thank you

  • Do check out:

    1) 'Benefits & Work' - an online organisation that has excellent advice and years of experience in helping the general public apply successfully for benefits that they are entitled to.  Read the members comments on their site to get an idea of the extreme gratitude they feel for what they ended up achieving, often after initially having their claims for benefits turned down (eg being awarded zero points on an initial PIP application, to gaining higher award on Daily Living and standard award for Mobility).

Some parts of the website are open access - including all the brilliant comments from successful applicants - and some of it is only open for members, which I'd highly recommend: the members section includes the individual guides on how to apply for each benefit (depending on which are relevant to you), going through the questions point by point, explaining what the DWP is actually looking for (and what traps to avoid), and suggesting how best to explain just how difficult certain aspects of daily living are for you.  (The guide for PIP is ca 120 pages long!  But each section is clearly laid out, and easily understandable - and i say that as somebody with ADHD who really struggles to concentrate on reading text.)

I would 100% recommend subscribing for a year's membership - and then resubscribing every year after!

    2) Contact your local CAB.  They have specialist benefit advisors who can give you very specific advice, help and support, both with benefit entitlement, and with applying for specific benefits.  Also, if you are turned down for a certain benefit (eg PIP), they will automatically help you put in for Mandatory Reconsideration (it's common to get turned down for a benefit when you first apply, but the decision often overturned on appeal).

    Good luck! :)

  • Thank you, i’ll look in to it

  • PIP (Personal Independence Payment) is the only benefit as far as I am aware which is not means tested but it’s difficult to get even if you have a physical disability let alone autism.
