What sounds do you hear at night?

As I lay awake last night, for a while there were lots of sounds. If they are not sudden they can help me fall asleep. However if I don't recognize them I try to work out what they are before I get to sleep.

Last night as the air was still I heard trains, plane, cars passing nearby, distant hum of cars and boy racers. 

Sometimes I also hear helicopters and a hum of something in the distance.

Sometimes it is wildlife. I have been pleased recently to hear an owl a couple of times.

  • At the moment it's complete silence because I live in a block of flats some distance from a through road.  Occasionally I can hear Foxes screeching outside and dogs barking in near by flats.

    In the early days of the COVID lockdown it was a different matter, I was kept awake by a humming sound. I'm certain in came from a near by flat and not outside because when I opened the window I couldn't hear it outside. I never found out which flat it came from but it lasted for almost a year, the humming only came on during the darkness and never during daylight.  Someone suggested it cold be lamps turning on and off with a light control, or some kind of heating or drugs being grown, who knows.
