Support that has been useful for you

Getting support for autism in this country can be extremely difficult. Knowing what support to ask for even more so. So I thought this would be a place for people to give examples of people and systems making a positive difference for them. It can be work, school, friends, family, apps, pets, books, your own coping methods. Just anything that has helped.

I'll go first.

My uni provided a disability mentor who helps me with admin and organisation. He helps me write emails, prioritise tasks, and sort out interactions that I'm not sure what happened.

My area fortunately does have post diagnostic support (once you've got the diagnosis BASS has some great stuff). They helped set up an 'Autism Passport' which I have a copy of and is also on file in the local hospitals, which meant when I had an appointment they booked it longer so I could do it bit by bit and take breaks as it was very sensorily distressing.

Whiteboards have been really helpful in helping me remember work tasks to remembering to eat properly. They work a lot better than phone apps for me because they are physical and there.

Looking forward to hearing what other people have
