Autism and ADhD

Hi. I don’t know if I am in the right place. I am a 48 year old male who is waiting on an ASD assessment. I am bi-polar  but am confident that I have ADJD amd ASD. Does anybody have any guidance on what to expect and what coping mechanisms may help me?

  • ADHD and Bipolar are two very big areas to cover in a concise reply and I suspect it would be difficult to summarise as it can be different for each person.

I will therefore point you to some books that can answer much better than I can:

    ADHD
Everything You Wanted to Know About ADHD (...But Forgot You Wanted to Ask) - Neuroscience Education Institute (2008)
    ISBN 1422500330

Scattered Minds - The Origins and Healing of Attention Deficit Disorder-Knopf Canada (1999) - Gabor Maté
    eISBN 9780307374691

Scattered - how attention deficit disorder originates and what you can do about it - Gabor Mate (2014)
    eISBN 9781101153857

    Bipolar
The Concise Guide to Bipolar Disorder - Francis Mark Mondimore (2022)
    eISBN 9781421444048

Understanding Bipolar Disorder - The Essential Family Guide - Aimee Daramus (2020)
    eISBN 9781647390013

The Bipolar Book - History, Neurobiology, and Treatment - Aysegul Yildiz, Pedro Ruiz, Charles Nemeroff (2015)
    ISBN 9780199300532

I would recommend looking at the reviews of these books on sites like Amazon to see if they are well reviewed.

I have a close family member who is bipolar and it is a very challenging condition to manage. I would strongly recommend getting professional help from a combination of your doctor and (initially) a psychiatrist and (subsequently) a qualified therapist with experience of both your conditions - they really need to know how they interact to treat you effectively.
