son been diagnosed this morning with autism. not sure on what to do?

Hi my son was diagnosed with autism this morning and all I know about it is the word. Would like help advise or personal experience if any one willing to share. I am sat on the fence as weather to say i agree or disagree with result as thats how my son has always been to me and cant really seperate if its autistic behaviour or if thats just dont want to use the word but normal behaviour as everything my son does is normal to me. Cheers lucy

  • I have tried but just words. Am sure tommorow with a fresh pair of eyes will help.

  • why don't you read some literature about autism? There is lots on this website.

  • Hi thanks for reply hes 4 on monday.i havent been offered any support and all I really know is the name autism nothing much else. I have been left with the decision of saying I agree or disasgree with what there say as I am in disbelief as to there findings but thinks thats due to am ust to how he is eceryday. I have to give them a call next week and take it from there but not sure on what to answer as I dont know how autistic there findings are x

  • So sorry you've been left feeling 'abandoned' after your son's diagnosis.

Of course your son is still your son even with a diagnosis it doesn't change who he is, it just means you have an awareness of what's going on and you will now have to fight his corner (which of course as a mum you already do!)

You don't mention how old he is, I assume of school age, so you should get some support for him at school.

Have you been offered any support? Contacts? Have you had any contact with his schools SENCo? (If he's of school age)

There is loads of imformation on the homepage here about autism, throughout the discussion forum and widely on the internet.

Hopefully someone will come along to offer you some practical advice on where to turn now.

You're not alone, lots of people here have been in a similar situation.
