What is cake?

After a bunch of mental-acrobatics and complex-philosophical consideration. I have decided to challenge this idea, at least in my own mind, of what cake is..

Does a cake always have to be sweet, and not savoury, or can it also be savoury? If the former is true, who made it so, and are they correct..?

If there is no patron of the cake, if there is no rule on sweetness being the core-component, then is it we who have created this guise which enshrouds the true-nature and potential of cake. If there is a sin present, in the presentation of cake as savoury, have we not created the sin in believing that it so..?

So I ask you this, what do you see, when you envision a cake that is savoury and why?

  • Working on the assumption that it's an edible cake that is safe to eat, does it really matter if the cake is sweet or savoury? As long as the person eating it finds it enjoyable and likes the taste, surely that is all that really matters.

When I envision a savoury cake, the only thing that comes to my mind are cakes containing vegetables like carrots or beetroot. However, I don't consider carrot cake to be savoury, especially if it happens to include overly sweet cream-cheese frosting on the top. As for beetroot cake, I don't think I've ever tried it, so have no idea if I would consider it to be savoury or sweet.

I consider this to be sort of similar to the debate about whether pineapple should be used as a pizza topping. Wink

  • This is precisely the kind of intellectual-icebreaking that I had hoped this discussion would champion.. if only the autistic-community facilitated more pineapple-talk..

  • Before you get too excited by my mention of pineapple, I am not suggesting that I consider fruit toppings on pizzas to be cakes. For a cake to be a cake, one requires (at the very least) a basic cake mixture, not pizza dough. The ingredients for a basic cake mixture and a pizza dough are different.

All I was trying to say was the discussion about whether a cake has to be sweet reminded me of the debate about whether pineapple belongs on a pizza. If you like it, then yes. If you don't, then no.

  • I'm sure you will recover. Relaxed

Not that I have any intention of making one, or wanting to eat one, but I find myself wondering if Tomato Cake exists. There has to be someone out there who has made a cake containing 'unusual' ingredients.

  • Honestly, I came into this discussion with all kinds of preconceived-notions of what cake was, but I’ve been foiled at every turn.. I’ll never be the same..
