Dream Road Trip

Hello,

if you could go on a dream road trip, what would it be? I would love to drive my classic Land Rover along Route Sixty Six and see ghost towns such as Glenrio in Texas. It is such a cultural icon of the US, the Mother road as Steinbeck called it. I did do a recent trip along our A47 on my way to Suffolk but nice as it was, hardly the same. It does not matter if you are unable to drive, use your imagination, after all, you could be a passenger/navigator on such a trip.

  • This is a combination of pure fantasy and wishful thinking, and I make no apologies if my vivid imagination causes me to get a little carried away. Lol

David Tennant would pull up in front of my house in one of those luxury spacious motorhomes. After recovering from the shock (me, not him), he would sweep me off my feet (think Robert Redford in An Officer and A Gentleman) and carry me to the front passenger seat, telling me, "Strap yourself in, we're going on a road trip."

I am speechless because I'm not really accustomed to my favourite Doctor Who turning up unexpectedly at my house with his Sonic Screwdriver. Ooh er, did I just actually say that? Because it is impossible for me to take my eyes off Mr Tennant, and I'm trying to resist the urge to start sniffing him (I'm getting high on the smell of his wonderful aftershave), I don't really register where we are heading until I spot an extremely familiar road sign, which is written in English and Welsh.

Rather excitedly, I say to him, "We're not going to...?" Before I have managed to complete the sentence, he says, "Yup! That's exactly where we are going!" Our destination is the Gower Peninsula in Wales, which I was very familiar with as a child. The best is yet to come, as to make this trip even more memorable and special, the wonderful Mr Tennant has arranged for a private plane to take us on a flight around the coastline. We drink champagne, and he feeds me strawberries while I soak in the breathtaking view.

Alas! I wake up and realise that it was all just an incredibly lovely dream, and that I am not actually snuggling up next to Mr Tennant in a luxury motorhome. This is a shame, as I had rather hoped our next road trip would have been to the Dorset coast.

  • A architecture-historical daydream-fulfilling story-filled road-trip. In a 4x4 pinzgauer with a bohemian-interior with me as the navigator and Sam Elliot as the driver.
We’d go through Edinburgh, Fort William (at which we happen upon an outdoor festival), overnight at Eileen-Aigas which the client needed a package picked-up from (with a outside barbecue), and up to Caledonia to drop off the package at some castle.. my dog would also be with us..

  • LR's with the spare on the bonnet look great until you have to lift the bonnet to work on the engine or try and drive off road with the reduced vision! I too like the Titanic and have a few books on it. VW campers are nice and would make a good vehicle for a road trip.

LR's can be hard riding if the springs have not been maintained. I replaced all four so my backside was spared on the way to Suffolk! Great fun to drive.

  • That's amazing I hope you get to do that one day! My Grandfather has a classic Landrover like one of the green army ones with the wheel on the bonnet - uses it mostly on his farm to carry different things. I've been in it a few times really awesome but very uncomfortable to travel in I thought :)

I would love to go to Belfast and check out where the Titanic was built - Titanic's my special interest. And I'd also love to tie that in with going up to Scotland and exploring the vast countryside up there. I don't drive but if I did I'd go in one of those classic VW campers.

  • I’ve always wanted to go on The Ghan, it was originally done by Afghans with camels. It’s now a train journey from Adelaide to Darwin and passing through Alice Springs.

Another one is  driving down through Italy staying at different locations and finishing in Sicily.

  • I think it would be rad to follow the silk road or something heading out through Asia.
