How to Help Those with ASD

Please feel free to add your penny worth about what you consider the best ways that people with ASD's can be helped - maybe this with give NAS some food for thought about what they should be doing.

My thoughts are that first and foremost anyone with an ASD should be comfortable in their own environment. Therefore NAS should be helping people to find a living space that suits them.

However and obviously this is supposed to be the domain of local authorities, but sadly many local authorities are ignoring the Autism Act. With such a huge budget surely spending even £100,000 a year on having 2 or 3 people at NAS to help people find somewhere suitable to live should be a priority ?

  • Many of us, due to our neurology, have a sensitivity to noise that is far below the usual threshold of annoyance. Just because you cannot see a physical sign of a problem, for example being in a wheelchair, does not mean that a person is any less disabled; but neurological and psychological conditions get  ignored!. So we need adaptations to our living environment, just as people in wheelchairs get given wide entrances and hand rails.

    Our adaptations could include our housing being built away from noisy areas and noisy neighbours, or  certainly ensuring our homes are built with good sound insulation. Sadly this all costs money and governmental will; and until people understand the nature of our condition and how our quality of life can suffer because of noise etc, this all remains a pipe-dream.
