I've been thinking about death a lot lately. My parents are both older and I've been struggling with my own health problems and last night I couldn't sleep because I was thinking about it. I don't scare easily but the idea of death scares me.

Despite some of the Authoritative comments here no one really knows.
However we DO know a couple of things about the process itself, at least some of us do.
The main thing being is that for most people, once death is certain, it is known that the body produces a compound similar to MDEO-DMT, which seems to make the process a lot horrible for the participant than for the onlookers in some cases.
Which is a mercy.
Afterwards it's a binary choice as far as I can determine, either nothingness, I.E the best, most uninterrupted, peaceful sleep possible OR a transition to a new and currently incomprehensible existence.
For which there is some scientific evidence to suggest that is a possibility.
My take, (FWIW) is that, if I'm going to get a nice peaceful unending sleep at the end, that's a nice enough reward after all this "struggle and strife with occasional bits of nice", but I'd better get everything squared away before I do that.
BUT, as I believe is more likely, I'm going to either be resurrected to face my God, or just transition in one of the many other ways people suggest (and sometimes claim!) happens, then I strongly believe it's best to have not "given up" or "failed hard" in this life...
Either way, when it comes, it comes, but until then there's a life to be had, and it may well be the only one you will ever have, so make the best of it.
And that starts with not living in fear all the time.
(As some malevolent souls in the world would have you do, fro some weird or horrible reasons)..
