Skiing

Hi

I have a 7 year old with aspergers and 4 year old neurotypical. Hoping to take them skiing for the first time this season.

Does anyone know an aspergers friendly ski school/instructor in European resorts? I have found this group in Austria:

but you have to sign up to a 5 day all day program which is v expensive and also I don't want to be away from the kids all day.

Also found this place in Hemel Hempstead but not near us:

Thanks!

Chris

  • We have used Esprit Ski 3 times, although the first twice our son hadn't been diagnosed (the onset of AS came afterwards).

Last year (2015) I took him to Les Gets with Esprit, and had a fab time, although he's fairly high functioning.

We discussed this when booking, this handed us to an inclusion specialist, who discussed how we could manage it. I should add that Esprit don't specifically support ASD or indeed advertise. I was expecting to provide 1-1 support for him throughout.

We went in term time, arguing that he would be denied this sort of experience through school. This meant the groups were much quieter, although hadn't planned on being in middle of French winter break!

Original plan was to get private lessons, but he ended up with the junior group lesson which was quiet (term time - remember?), and I stayed on nearby slope (so he didn't feel mollycoddled) with the mobile on.

Only problem was by the end of the week he was outstripping me for pace and skill!

  • I can't remember the resort we went to but having experienced both british run ski schools and the ones run by locals both italian and french, I have to say that my children preferred the child friendliness of the italian and french instructions.  We didn't do the 5 day package and just dipped in and out of lessons when the boys felt like it.  It is more expensive, but we found it paid off long term.
