How's my Driving?

I'm back to driving to Derry, and back, negotiating the Sperrins and the new bypass to Derry. Everyone's either too fast, or too slow. I seem to be the only happy-medium driver.

An eternity of being scared s**tless by the Road Safety commercials, in my country, and a paranoid grandmother in the passenger seat, knocked my confidence; for so long. But now, I am breaking out of the social programming. I focus on small victories.

Now, I plan to drive to Belfast; rather than use a park-and-ride as a halfway house. I got an app to help with parking, recommended by a friend from Stranmillis. Now, I plan to conquer more gremlin-infested parts of my brain.

  • I have the same problem with the plant I like to use to add flavour and effect to my cigarettes...

There's two sorts of law, I learned a while back, Common Law and Statute Law..

One works for everyone, and essentially comes form God, one just works for some people..

Just ask a few guys who have cows "what do you think of unpasteurised milk" and your future supplier will out themselves...

  • Well no.  I wouldn't be able to happily live in a place that far from cows.  I love cows.  The nearest farm shop THAT HAS THE SPECIAL LICENCE required to sell unpasteurized straight-from-the-cow is (apparently) 45 miles away.  I'm not convinced....I'm still looking.

  • Excellent!  Go get'um cowboy!  Fighting the good fight.  I commend you...........but, take it steady... there are no prizes for smashing the Gremlins quickly, but there is GREAT satisfaction in obliterating them completely.  Always keep a little bit of energy in reserve for "the unexpected" ... we all know those tales!

    Happy Sunday to you Desmond.

    Number.

[PS.  The nearest unpasteurized milk supplier I have found so far is 45 miles away.......but I'm not a quitter.]

  • Driving seems to have become untenable for me recently. I perceive the roads are now a mix of excruciatingly slow or racetrack with no happy or safe medium.

It seems that the endless traffic calming measures and roadworks either induce stupor or rage in a portion of my fellow motorists which makes the process even less enjoyable than it used to be.

I'm returning my motorcycle to the road, as I have more places I want to go, and it's simply the most effective & enjoyable way of doing that.

I can't face a three stop journey around the city anymore, and public transport is too full of people to ever be considered pleasant or safe. (I know two people in my circle who were attacked on the bus, one had his health destroyed, the other drew his hatchet from under his coat and the would-be assailants reconsidered their position and got off at the next stop). Add the possibility that the public might also be carrying the latest bio-engineered pathogen in addition to their normal levels of filth and who the hell would get on a bus except the very desperate?

  • Best of luck with your driving! You got this. Like LucyLandRover said do take breaks if you need to and I hope you enjoy the journey. I drive but rarely go far but when I do, I'll often pull over for short breaks and I always take supplies of food and water with me. My car isn't classic, I don't think Thinking, but I do enjoy driving it. It's a little vauxhall adam. Have a fun journey!

  • Good luck with the driving trip Desmond. I do understand as I drive a classic vehicle and have cars tailgating me up hills not seeming to realize I need to drop down a gear. I did put a warning sticker on the rear window to say it is a slow moving vehicle and this had made a difference. I drove all the way to Suffolk a few months back and it was quite dauting for me but it gave me confidence and I plan to drive to Lincolnshire next week to visit a few avaition museums. I hope you enjoy your journey and take a break should you feel the need.
