I have recently been diagnosed with ASD. I wonder how would it be to have Autistic friends. Would we be able to connect more?

Hi,

I am Aisha, 23 years old. I am Autistic. Before that, I did not have an idea about it. I am curious to meet a person who is Autistic just as I am. I'm looking to learn and meet someone who can understand. Since I have always felt different around others. I wonder how it would feel not to feel too different.

Let me know what you think, did you get a chance to meet more Autistic people when you got diagnosed?

Thank you.

  • I haven't met a lot more autistic people since diagnosis. I did try going to autistic meet ups, but I often struggled to talk to people there too, which somehow seemed worse than not connecting with NTs. I do have a few non-autistic friends (and one who I suspect is autistic. He's currently pursuing a neurodivergence assessment). My friends tend to be quiet, thoughtful people, though, not loud extroverts. That matters to me more than NT/ND. My wife is probably autistic or AuDHD, although she hasn't been assessed, and that does feel more important that we're similar in that way.
