I have recently been diagnosed with ASD. I wonder how would it be to have Autistic friends. Would we be able to connect more?

Hi,

I am Aisha, 23 years old. I am Autistic. Before that, I did not have an idea about it. I am curious to meet a person who is Autistic just as I am. I'm looking to learn and meet someone who can understand. Since I have always felt different around others. I wonder how it would feel not to feel too different.

Let me know what you think, did you get a chance to meet more Autistic people when you got diagnosed?

Thank you.

  • Hi :) nice to meet you! I was also diagnosed very recently (at age 25) and I actually realised that a lot of my friends are neurodivergent! I just hadn’t known before but when I mentioned to them that I was waiting to be assessed or that I had been diagnosed, i found out many of them are autistic too :). Not all of my friends are neurodivergent but most of them. There are a few special people that I know that socialising with just feels natural and not exhausting and I can spend much much more time with these friends- i think it’s because i can be more myself. I’ve not deliberately sought out autistic friends and i met all of these people before i knew i was autistic ( mostly at university) - when I get on particularly well with someone i meet now, i sometimes joke they must be autistic too because I seem to have managed to befriend a lot of other neurodivergent people :)- i actually have much more of a feeling now whether someone i meet could be autistic too.
