Advice for Raising funds for a private diagnosis

Hello - (seeking advice not money don’t worry!)
I am a young student adult seeking to raise funds for a private diagnosis as I am really struggling at the moment to cope with my symptoms, as well as explain things to employers (not being able to wear wool, being overstimulated etc) and an NHS one is over 3 years waiting plus they keep trying to say I need to do an ADHD one and can’t do an autism spectrum one, but having looked into ADHD I don’t resonate with lots of that- my issues:

  1. My parents don’t love diagnosis so won’t be able to help and I also don’t want them to find out - my sibling was diagnosed a long time ago and my sibling was never told and now my parent denies that happened. Wondering how I can fundraise without using my social media?
  2. it costs £950 for the cheapest one I found. That would be a more 100s than are in my savings. When I graduate and get a job I am trying to save to move out so will am nervous about affording both
  3. most importantly- what are the best ways to fundraise? I can bake cakes and stuff but I don’t know where I’d be allowed to sell them

any advice is very welcome x

  • Hi, If you are a student, could the university possibly help? I know that for a friend of mine the university ended up paying for a private diagnosis as he had been waiting so long and needed adjustments.

I'm not familiar with right to choose but that sounds like a good option.

For a possibly more affordable private diagnosis I would suggest contacting Sara Heath: Autonomy Plus - Pre-Diagnostic (shropshireautonomy.co.uk) She does a pre-diagnostic assessment but if she thinks you are autistic, you can then go and see a consultant psychiatrist that she works with who will do an assessment and if appropriate can give a diagnosis which is recognised by the NHS. I was diagnosed via Sara and had a good experience.

    Good luck!

  • Hi there- so helpful! Would you be able to share how much Sara’s services cost?

  • Hi, I think it would be best to just phone/email Sara directly, then she can give you all the details and the costs (this is better as I don't know if any of the charges have changed)- She's lovely and she'll be the best person to advise you. And yes, there is then another charge to get the diagnosis after the pre-diagnosis part. But overall for me it was much cheaper than the price you listed. The good thing about it being in 2 separate charges is that if it turns out that you aren't autistic then you don't have to pay the second charge. You get a detailed report from Sara about the pre-diagnostic assessment regardless of the outcome. And if she does think you are autistic, it is up to you if and when you book for an appointment with the psychiatrist.
