I love books about the history of football in a country where it also kind of tells the history of the country through football as well if that makes sense. It combines 3 of my interests, football, history and learning about other countries 

My father in law loves all books football related, so he'll probably have read a few that you. It's not football but I've read Penguins Stopped Play by Harry Thompson, it's about 11 village cricketers taking on the world, it describes the author's experiences forming and travelling with the Captain Scott XI, an English amateur cricket team, around Britain and abroad. It's a really good read.
