Shopping difficulties

Hello everyone.

One of the things I do in my spare time is shopping. But there are certain specific types of shopping that I find difficult, especially clothes shopping. For many years I am used to wearing a certain specific combination of clothes for work and leisure purposes. I usually wear a cream t-shirt, a cream button or polo shirt on top, plus a pair of cream trousers. The problem is that many department stores sell so many different shades of cream, that the specific colour I would want to buy can be difficult to get hold of. Even if I succeeded, the chances are that my preferred colour would become even more difficult in the future. If the shopping costs are expensive, adding the public transport costs on top would make my shopping experiences really expensive.

Another problem that I face is that I would need a number of specific clothing items for work and leisure purposes. In the summer, I would end up sweating when I get home, in which case I would need to put a fresh shirt on. In this case, I would have at least seven t-shirts in my wardrobe to last me a week. That may seem a lot, but in the summer, it's better to have the extra shirts, and not need them, than to need and not have.

I am capable of managing my money, my shopping budget etc on my own, but the chances are that my local department store would only have a limited number of what I want, in the exact size and colour combination that I would want. What I would do is travel from my home town of Felixstowe in Suffolk, to Colchester in Essex, buy a few items from there, and then go to the exact same brand of same department store in Ipswich and hope there are a few identical items available. Because I have been having issues with getting the exact shade of cream clothes that I would want, I am now turning to monochrome colours (i.e. a white and black combination). Whites and blacks are much easier for me to get hold of in one high street or shopping centre than a more specialised colour such as cream.

Whenever I don't find what I'm looking for, I get confused. Even when I do, I still get confused, and struggle to decide what to do next. Fortunately, there are staff members nearby to provide help if required. Sometimes it's better to spend more money on comfortable clothes, suitable electrical items (such as mobile phones) etc, than less money on something unsuitable or unreliable.

Have any of you had difficulty when it comes to shopping? I would love to be able to share my shopping experiences with you.

  • Hello, tbag.

Many high street department stores cater for menswear and womenswear fashions in equal measure. I occasionally watch fashion programmes on television, and where there's lots of different clothing items to model, there's also lots of possible clothing and colour combinations to order, which can make things quite difficult for some customers. And then there's the difficult matter of deciding what to wear, what to wear it with etc.

In the past few weeks, I have been buying lots of new clothes, especially because creams can be quite hard to get hold of in my preferred shade, like I mentioned before. However, my local department store may not necessarily have more than, for example, three pairs of chino trousers. Therefore, I would visit more than one outlet of the exact same department store.

In my case, I ordered two pairs of black chinos from the Westfield shopping centre in Stratford, London, plus four more in Ipswich, Suffolk, making six in total. They may have cost me a fair amount of money, but there would only be one shade of black, as supposed to three or four creams. I can easily replace things like socks, shirts, jumpers and jackets, but if I needed to replace a number of my pairs of trousers quickly, that can be difficult. If any future pairs of black chinos are easy to get hold of in any high street store, the extra money is worth spending.

There are some clothing colours or styles that are only suitable for a specific season or occasion. For the spring or summer season, I suppose that blue or green would look good. For the autumn or winter season, I suppose that brown or maroon red would look good, although some people would specify one specific clothing item in black or white, and an identical one in a fashionable colour.

Normally I would avoid going shopping at weekends altogether. As well as those noisy kids, there would sometimes be crowds of football supporters, or people going to other sporting venues. On weekdays, the kids would usually be at school, although I do sometimes see and hear a few young pre-school children. I prefer to do high-street shopping instead of out-of-town shopping because the railway or bus station is usually nearby.
