Soft Play Ideas for Autistic Children

Hello all

i was hoping to get your thoughts and ideas for a soft play centre we're hoping to take over.

As a parent of a child with Autism, we've found there is nowhere around where we live that provides a centre that includes activities for autism on a daily basis. We have services like Barnados and Children's Services and Mencap, but they generally run specific dates weeks in advance. We'd like to set up a centre that is open to the general public but provides opportunities for children and young adults with autism too.

We are hoping to set up a couple of sensory rooms and a sensory garden, but would like to ask what you, as parents or carers of Autistic children would like a centre like this to have.

To give you a bit of context the centre is currently your bog standard large soft play and cafe setup. We are hoping to expand on this. So what would be your thoughts on things like Drop and Shop, computer classes, information hub and advice on help etc.

Thanks in advance!

  • nope same person :-) its all on my things to do list. Thanks for your help

  • did i contact you about the successful, adults with autism camp, in the share centre in Northern Ireland ( feature in BBC programme ) ? maybe ur a different person

  • Thanks Plastic, I did notice it was an elderly thread. I hope that they are too busy working at their project to respond but I thought I'd leave a message for them just in the hope that they will see it and give me a few tips.

  • Hiya

This thread is over 8 years old - you may have a long wait for a reply.  Smiley

    Any progress with your plans?

  • hi, did you get any success from this project? my wife and I were thinking of doing the same thing in Cornwall.

  • There are a few special needs play centres close to where I live and a few things I think are good are sunken trampolines, poles with spinning platforms and horizontal soft cylinders to squeeze between.

and obviously parents / carers are alloweto full access to the play zones and there should be sessions for older yp as well as younger children.

    good luck with your venture
