Book problem

I have a Kindle but prefer to read an ordinary book. There's something nice about the smell of books and the feeling of holding a real one.

I have a big collection which I've read so many times. In 2016 I had a mental breakdown and I'm only just starting to recover again. During that time I didn’t find books appealing and wasn't interested in reading. Sadly my books just gathered dust and now some of the pages at the top are marked. I've given them a gentle clean but they won't budge. It's so annoying as they were in excellent condition. It's putting me off from using the books now. I'll attach a pic do you know if there's anything I can do? What the marks are? Could cry at seeing the condition of the books.

  • If you remember old erasers, that had one half for pencil and a more abrasive half for pen ink, I have used the pen eraser half to good effect for similar marks - foxing - on the tops of books. For best results I clamp the book closed and just rub the eraser quite gently along the grain of the paper edges. Anything that is slightly abrasive, but not wet, will have the same effect, so fine emery board or fine pumice would probably work. Always try on a small area first.
