  • You can't blam Aspergers. You might be able to say (if it's true) that it was part of the reason. But you can't blame it for committing fraud.

I get the impression that you're looking for an excuse.

  • ...just to add, that compulsive lying would be more unusual in Asperger's as we are more often very honest.  However, it can be argued (and had been by Tony Attwood but with regards to children with AS) that lack of empathy and other traits of Asperger's can make a child lie as they don't realise the implications.

  • The way you are asking it, is as if you are looking for an excuse for deliberate actions.

If you genuinely didn't realise that you were meant to inform the DWP then having Asperger's could be an exacerbating factor.  I get genuinely confused and stressed by letters I get sent to do with money/benefits, and mistakes I have made were genuinely because of my deficits.

I do think the DWP should be very careful treating people with neurological conditions and/or mental health conditions the same as other people.  Some people don't even realise they can ask for advocacy and struggle on alone with confusing matters.  If they are threatening action, you could always get a letter from your GP or mental health worker or social worker to explain your difficulties.
