Obscure forgotten moments from telly history that maybe only you remember

One of these just popped into my head randomly after many years.

It was a Saturday night, in 198[?] - early 1980s I think. possibly around 1983/4 as I think we hadn't moved house.

Paul Daniels Magic Show.

Paul (for it was he) says something like  'OK, this next trick requires putting a thought into the mind of all the kids at home. But I need you to come closer to the screen.' I go a bit closer. My sister does too. 'No, closer than that.' We go closer. 'No, I mean - right up to to the screen, close as you can'

We go right up to it, almost touching. So close you can see the pixels/lines.

He goes 'Right, that's better. Now, listen quietly, look right at me, and really concentrate'

About two seconds later... massive loud blast of pure static. Result: we ran like hell from the screen. Some other kids must have wet themselves I'm sure. Maybe others had nightmares.

Must have got special permission to do that as it was effectively a simultaneous deliberate cut in transmission with a massive boost in volume.

He did come back on a few seconds later at normal volume to undercut the scare with some bants. Anyway, I have a feeling I might be one of a very few people who remembers that.

Anyone got something similar?

  • Ok here’s a really weird one that I’m certain I’m the only person on earth remembers. In the summer of… 1987 maybe (?) Newsround did a kind of live roadshow thing on weekday mornings during the summer holidays. The line-up was John Craven (nearing the end of his tenure) and a very young Krishnan Guru-Murty. I think it was a ten minute thing they did on stage during a longer morning broadcast - ‘But First This’ with Simon Parkin or one of those sorts of deals. Anyway, it goes on for the six weeks or whatever. And then on the last day, Krishnan takes it upon himself to tell John C that given it’s been a warm summer he thinks John’s been far too covered up. It’s clearly an unplanned ambush as JC had a ‘wtf’ type reaction. Then Krishnan goes to the crowd ‘whaf do you think? Should I cut his clothes off?’ And the mob goes ‘yeah, go for it’. And KGM produces scissors and starts subjecting this middle aged man to the indignity of rapid exposure of parts of himself he’d exercised his right not to have exposed. Not total nudity or anything, but still just not a nice thing to do. He looked really uncomfortable but was forced into being a good sport. But I thought it was a really horrible thing to do. These days it would be considered a very inappropriate crossing of a boundary. Assault really. But in those days… perfectly fine apparently. Felt like a bit of misjudged japery that had strayed into bullying. Anyway, might not even exist in the archives any more, those summer kids hours were so ephemeral that it’s hard to imagine they’d have bothered storing all of it.
