What age should I be

Hi All,

I have notice that I condition of aspergers is getting me down sometimes. Let me explain on Saturday 7th as I was doing my casual parking marshal at job at Twickenham  I asked in a fairly friendly manner if this guy waiting in his posh toyota jeep was waiting to pick any one up, but then I  got a very agree reply saying "What do you think i am a taxi driver"  to which i apologises very quickly.  It still worrys me a little when I think about it.  I somtime wonder what mental age I should be  if i didn't have aspergers?  As there are other time when I get my leg pulled about other things which i take in as true when they are not. I would like to go and see someone who has knowledge of aspie's & Just have a talk about life etc. is there a councilling service for us, I'm a adult aged 51 with sometime a mental age of 12 but I can drive & do maintenance to it,so maybe my mental age isn't 12 after all.  That All started when I had a dislexia test  when i was 39 & the test was designed for a 12 year old, 109 iQ on techincal, 99 IQ  on verbal.  So what mental age sholud I be.

Yours peter0003

  • As openheart says, your intelligence is adult but your emotional age is a bit younger.

Taking things literally and failing to understand humour doesn't make you like a child, it is just the communication aspect of Asperger's.

Don't get hung up on what emotional age you are.  In fact, Aspies often have a delightful child-like playfulness because of it.  All you need is to learn some coping tactics on how to respond if someone is sarcastic.  You don't need to apologise for yourself unless you have done something very wrong, don't let a***holes like that guy make you feel inferior.
