Sparkly's Lousy Memory

This is really bugging me...

When I was a very young child, I had been read a story about a man with a hammer. The only thing I can remember is that the sound of the man hammering was, "Bim-bam, bim-bam". Whatever the title of the book was I have long since forgotten.

The story had obviously made something of an impression on me. After visiting my grandad who had been hammering, I then spent the next few years referring to him as 'Grandad Bim-bam'.

I just wish I could remember the title of the book.

  • Can't help with the book, but I wanted to say you don't have that lousy a memory since you do remember the book at all! My husband has a very patchy memory of his childhood.

Some books from my childhood I recall with a lot of clarity, like a story about two brothers who fell down a well (on different occasions) but the older one had such a ridiculously long name that by the time his brother managed to say it he got quite ill and nearly died. And I can still recall that stupid long name! Though maybe not how to spell it... something like RikkiTikkiTemboNoSarRemboChariBariRuchiPipPeriPembo.(I wonder, does not only being able to recall that, but having such a strong urge to share it, resisting for a while then deciding that this forum is a perfectly acceptable place to share such a thing, provide further evidence towards my autistic identity?!) Yet there are other books I loved more which had lovely pictures and I can remember the pictures but not the story or any words related to them so no way could I even try to find those.

Now I am wondering if those old children's books were passed on or if they are lurking in Dad's attic somewhere? It would be lovely to find them!

Edit to add I googled it and got it mostly right but apparently not the first letter which was actually T!

Edit again to add I always wondered why he didn't just say 'my brother has fallen down the well!' But then the story wouldn't work...
