Newbie!!!

Hi all, I am new to the site.

I have a seven year old son who was diagnosed with Autisum in March. My son went into the care of a speech and language therapist at the age of two and half after it was noticed he was not talking or communicating with his peers or adults as he should be. After five years of assessments, including a wait of 18 months for a panel of experts who work within the realms of social communication my son was 'diagnosed' with Autisum! I recieved a letter through the post informing me of this and a wad of leaflets with no clue of how to best support my son.

Having read several leaflets I believe that my son is borderline between ASD and Aspergers as he shows traits of both. I am very lucky that my son is at school and has a statement in place offering him the support of  a TA for 19 hours per week and that he is doing very well in his education.

At home however it is a different story, I also have a two year old son and it can be very hard at times to strike a balance as my oldest son has behavioural issues that are linked with his ASD. He is easily frustrated at the simplest of tasks and often quickly loses his temper, he has no fear of strangers or danger and this makes even a simple outing to the park hard work. He is 'over the top' with some of his emotions and to an outsider looking in you would think he was just a very badly behaved child, not a child with Autisum.

It is and can be very tiring at times and is driving both myself and my husband to our wits end so to speak. Although my son gets help at school I believe we could do with some kind of family support but don't have a clue of where to start looking. Any information that anyone could give us with regards of where to look for this support would be really appreciated . We live in Hull and are just desperate for some kind of help x

  • Hi!!! I also am a newbie too! Still trying to get the hang of this site aswell!

I am from Northern Ireland, 24 and have a 3year old son who has just been diagnosed with autism! Not really sure what help or support is out there for us either! So far, my son has seen an occupational therapist for a period of 6weeks but now has stopped, so there is now nothing and no one to help him. He is due to start nursery school in september, but will have no help whatsoever as the waiting list for the educational physcologist is so big he will not be seen before september! he currently goes to the local playschool two afternoons a week and he is ok there so i am staying positive and thinkin that he will do ok in mainstream come september and fingers crossed he gets his statement and gets some educational help which is desperatly needed! my husband and i are currently struggling with getting clothes on him, he fights a battle getting dressed, we now have figured out he will only wear soft tracksuit bottoms (fleecy) and soft tshirts and jackets, but there cant be any linning on any of it or he will go into meltdown! Any help or advice or even just someone to talk to would really be great! just finding it quite hard at the minute and dont no what to think never mind what to do next!

    Thanks for listening
