Anyone know what the forum's 'Follow' feature is/does?

I can't even work out how to send a message, or a friend request. So I'm basically saying, I've no idea sorry
That 'Follow' feature has made no obvious difference, whether I'm Following people or they're Following me! :D

I searched desperately earlier and I did find a setting that selecting it meant I could receive messages from anyone, so I selected that. It had previously been on friends only. I don't know if that helps.
And don't listen to that tree, what would it know anyway
Funnily enough, the tree doesn't agree.
PS. I do wish you were able to decipher the the FR thing, P. I'm not exactly a technical person myself, so I understand completely. But it's lovely to have your company in any way.
