Do you hear sounds that aren't there ?

I've been reading all the replies to my 'dreams' thread, and something else i thought of was, i may have asked this before, does anyone hear noises that aren't there. A bit like tinitus, like music or someone singing, although it sounds more like whailing. In  the past i've heard the sound  which i thought was horses and soldiers, as if Robin Hood or the Battle of the Roses, and the cobbled streets. This has seemed so real i got up out of bed and looked out of the window. There was nothing there and i went to our local librabry to see did they have any records of what was on the land, perhaps 100s of years ago, before the houses were built. The only records showed fields and farms, no battles.

    Yes. Things that go bump in the AM of the night several houses down the street, including 4 doors downs washing machine going achugggaaaachugggaaaaachugggaaaaabinkbunkbonkgurnnnhrrrrrrllllllnnnnnnnhrrrrrrrrr (either it had steel toe capped boots going around in it or it was in the middle of self destructing. Eitherway) I was surprised anyone on our road was managing to sleep through that racket.

    No. The sounds are definitely from things that actually exist, air in the pipes going along behind the walls, gas leak on the stove, etc.
    It's the kind of thing that makes me think autism sprang out of a set of genes meant for hyper vigilance as a survival tactic, because although it's overwhelming in the modern world which is full of sounds I imagine my audio and night visual sensitivity was great for avoiding things like cave bears for my distant ancestors.
    (Quick side note, this is why Autism is a natural variance and not necessarily a disorder, because if it's genetic it obviously served plenty of our ancestors well enough for them to keep passing it on into the modern day.)

    I cannot say what you heard though. Although I will just say audio hallucination is actually very common and doesn't mean you are delusional. The most common one is thinking we heard someome call our name, and the next I think is hearing music that isn't there, the "earworm".

    I experience a similar hyper vigilance to sounds

    Like your washing machine incident I was driven almost insane by a neighbour's tumble dryer at all hours of the day or night. On numerous occasions while travelling I have had to request another room, as I could not tolerate a specific buzzing or humming noise. The staff dispatched to my room to resolve the problem could not hear it at all. I have no doubt in my mind that the noises were real and a move usually resolved the issue, only for me to then pick up on something else....

    No doubt in our distant past we were useful. I would be able to hear a predator approaching or the sound of a wolf from miles away. In the modern world I struggle to find a positive use for my hyper sensitivity.
