German cucumber E Coli scare

You have probably heard about the E coli scare in Germany, related to imported cucumbers, and possibly lettuce and raw salad ingredients. I am now very worried about eating vegetables in general, and it has made my OCD worse with regard to washing vegetables. I don't want this to aggravate my food hygiene fears. Have you got any advise? I have heard that the German authorities are advising Germans not to eat raw tomatoes etc, as well as cucumbers. While I know that this does not apply to the UK, I am avoiding ALL tomatoes, as well as cucumbers and lettuce, even cooked ones and even tomato ketchup. Please give me advise as my obsessions are beginning to worry me

  • Hello Hope

    Thanks for posting your concerns.

As far as I am aware the German authorities have said that they don't really know where the E coli has come from.  I don't think that the UK authorities have issued any warnings about what we should or should not eat and I believe that eating tinned tomatoes or tomato ketchup should be fine as these will have been prepared a while a go before the E coli scare started.

If the UK Department of Health had any concerns about any food stuffs they would have given some guidance by now.

Until some guidance is given by the UK government I think that you are safe to eat tomatoes and cucumbers.

Please try not to worry too much about it but if you have any further questions please post and we will do what we can to help
