Newly diagnosed child with aspergers

Hi everyone, my 6 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with aspergers syndrome. I felt like a weight had been lifted when we got the diagnosis because we now know what is wrong and can get some support, but another part of me is incredibly devasted and feeling quite lost! Is there anyone out there in the same boat?

  • These are normal feelings.  Asperger's doesn't mean your daughter cannot achieve everything she would have without having the condition.

I am an adult with Asperger's (AS) and both my daughters are also on the autistic spectrum.

She may have secondary anxiety and may need support with this.  Ensure that she has all the support she needs and perhaps apply for a statement of special educational needs to ensure they provide tailored support that is legally binding.  This website may be of help: www.ipsea.org.uk

You can apply for DLA for her and Carer's Allowance from the DWP for yourself if you don't earn more than £100 p.w.

You can also if you need it, ask social services for an assessment of need for your daughter and if required a separate one for yourself which will give access to respite/short breaks if appropriate.

You could contact your local Parent Partnership organisation for help and support for things such as meetings you may need to have with the school.

There are lots of parents on here so I'm sure you will get lots of responses.
