Would welcome a little advice, as a newish step-parent of a lovely 9-year-old girl living with Autism and learning daily. My partner and I recently took all of our kids to Alton Towers for the weekend. The first day was spent in the splash park which was a hit with all children, the second day in the theme park. With ages from 8-12 there were some preferences on the rides and things to do. My partner's daughter does not like fast or scary rides, which was not a problem for us as there is lots to do for all ages and abilities and we paired off several times so that everyone could enjoy roller-coasters or more gentle rides. My partner's daughter wanted to go to the Adventure Play area which was very quiet at the time and involved lots of inflatables - I was shocked when the lady would not let her in, as she was 5cm over the maximum height at 135cm. As she was turned away she was heart-broken and upset - I had a quiet word with the lady and later complained at guest services, explaining that her needs mean that she often favours the activities for younger children, but no exception was given - such as a parent accompanying her, or perhaps ensuring she was not boisterous or disturbing other children - she is very placid and quiet and if given the chance this would easily be seen. Luckily she was 5cm under the maximum height for the driving school and although easily the tallest partaking, went on it time and time... and time again and loved it - she would probably still be on it given the chance. Has anyone any experience of their child being refused an activity, which they know their child will love and which is appropriate for them - it's really saddening to think that if we went back next year, the majority of the things she would like would be ruled out for her due to her height. I'm really new to all this and I just want to be able to support her and not ever see her so disappointed again :-)
