ASD assessment - in person or remote?

Hi,

I’m 48, live in Essex, and going for an ASD assessment around Spring 2023 (hopefully).

I have a few questions that I should have asked at the preliminary ASD phone assessment but didn’t. Thank you to anyone who replies to any part of the below  Blush

-Does the ASD assessment always have to be in person or has anyone experienced doing this remotely?

-How can I find out in advance where the assessment might take place? I’m in South Essex. Is it held at my GPs surgery or specific centres? I have no idea…

-If the assessor wanted to speak to my mum, will I need to bring her along in person or can they speak to her on the phone/video call. She’s 78 and I would only want to involve her if it was convenient for her.

- Are there any actual tests involved in the assessment like psychometric tests or just an interview?

Thank you Pray Blush

  • Thanks for sharing your experience Pray I believe I do have an email contact for the diagnostic team come to think of it, so I will check how they approach things in my area Blush

  • I think it varies from area to area. I was originally put on a waiting list for an in person appointment, but then my referral was transferred to another centre who did it online. Online was much better for me, but I was still very anxious about it.

They're usually done in a separate centre rather than the surgery, and you will have to fill in some paperwork first.  The content varies depending on where you are too, I think, but usually it's questions about your life experiences and what you find difficult, and they will observe how you interact as well as what you say.

Do you have an email contact?  I put some of my questions in an email and got answers that way.
