Ever get a sort of reverse Proustian rush when you see a song title or hear that song? Your first one there… without fail Fast Car brings back the amazing combined smell of recently planed wood and chips, salt and vinegar. Because in 1987 during a family holiday in Donegal, we (my parents and my siblings and me) stopped in to a just-refurbished cafe in Falcarragh on a very rainy day, and had chips while that song -then in the charts I think - played on the cafe’s radio. A happy little memory.

Strange to think I’m maybe the only one of five who’s retained that memory. Amazing what we each retain or lose over time, and why. Something about those specific olfactory and weather and holiday conditions made that one stick, permanently and vividly for me. And I’m getting the phantom fragrance again now. Thanks for that!
