potty training!

Hi all, my ds was just recenty diagnoses with asd,he will start mainstream school in september it is a special asd class but will be joining his peers for playtime and lunch. The school says they will make provision for him but prefer that he was potty trained so he dosn't stand out from the other kids at school! Im pretty sure he is ready but as his speech so limited im not sure how much he understands! no success yet and he is stressing out about wetting himself when nappy isnt on,i have took a break as i dont want potty training to get negative:(

Has anyone had ny experience like this ? really struggling and feel panicky that i wont get him potty trained in time:( any advice would be so helpful!!

  • Hi - can I say 1st of all that I think you're right to give him a break from toilet training.  From what you say it sounds like he's really afraid, perhaps of being flushed away himself?  For a little one, a toilet can seem a big thing + the flush.  I'm probably going to disappoint you now because I was thinking more of potty training when I replied, but here goes + if it sounds totally naff, then apologies.  If he's scared of the bottom of the toilet, maybe thinking he's going to fall in or be flushed away, then perhaps you need to find something that can block part of the toilet bowl off as a starting point?  Then he can do what he needs to do feeling a bit more secure?  As time moves on you can lower the height of whatever you're using to block the bottom off until eventually it's not an issue?  Sorry, but this is all I can think of.  If it's the sound/sight of the flush then only use it after he's gone.  Would he react the same way to the toilets at school?  They shd be smaller.  Is he able to urinate standing up rather than sitting down?  He cd stand on a little step so he didn't have to sit down. Also I think the school are putting pressure on you.  There may be other children who are in the same position as your son.  He may not be the only 1?  I wish I cd be more help - it's a difficult 1.  I don't know if there's info on other sites such as mumsnet etc.  Maybe others will come along with better advice.  Good luck with everything but remember you can only do what's possible + the school shd understand that.

  • Hi crystal, thanks for answering and taking time to read!! yes sorry i mean toilet training!! i was using a potty but i have bought a childs trainer toilet seat which he will sit on, but he wont  sit back on the seat he is very scared on it but he is willing to sit on it at least , but he stressing and holding it in and then wetting everywere! any advice would be great crystal and he will be using toilet at school too:)!

    many thanks

  • Hi - are we talking about actual potty training or going to the toilet? I don't want to start talking about potty training if the school will be expecting him to use the toilets, that's all.Smile
