Professionals involved in autism assessment

I have been told by the team that diagnosis autism that depending on the child one person can diagnose autism or it can be a team of people.

In my opinion I thought only a doctor or clinical psychologist could diagnose as they went to medical school.

How they can say a speech therapist diagnose on there own when these individuals keep saying they don't have the qualifications

  • Autism is actually a sociological "problem". It's not actually a problem to some of us here who are autistic, but it's hard for someone who's not autistic to understand why we don't think, perceive and reason the same. While someone may have added needs which require a medical professional, a philosopher, sociologist or therapist could be well educated enough to recognise the difference.

As findings in neurology become more available to the public, we're now learning that individuals who are similar neuro-types (think of this like a personality type) can synch their brain waves together when around one another and focusing on the same things. If you follow some of the science, the DSM is continually re-inventing how a thing is understood as new studies unveil new findings. Science is not hammered in stone. There was actually a good deal of understanding on it mid last century. As society changes, social structures change. A majority will evolve but the minority of autistic minds might not quite follow abrupt changes in social trends. Making it easier for a sociologist or anyone with the tools to communicate in more logical and direct ways to recognise differences.
