Autism Badge Do U have 1

My mum brought me an autism badge and wants me to wear it every where when I go out and I really want 2 but at school I know id get bullied and I'm not sure if people would treat me different in town as well. When I go out with mum I wear it but on my own I don't. Do u guys have 1? I like it and it describes what I'm like well but I'm bit anxious about wearing it.

  • Hello, I have an ‘I am autistic’ card.

I have not used it yet, but I completely understand what you mean about not being comfortable wearing it in school. It takes quite a lot of confidence to disclose your autistic identity openly, particularly in a setting like school (typically not a safe place to be autistic)  where some of your peers may have no understanding/interest.

I am very proud of being autistic so now feel very comfortable and positive about disclosing. You say you don’t feel comfortable wearing your badge when you are out, this is perfectly understandable. Alternatively, if you want a badge that is more discreet which still communicate your needs but doesn’t explicitly state that you are autistic you could look at these:

These badges basically state your own autistic needs such as ‘I need more time to process questions’ without highlighting why.

Also you could design your own badge or card, I might as I don’t really like the one I have from NAS.

I hope this helps, I know it takes time to feel confident in your own autistic identity and advocate for yourself.

Be proud of yourself, you are an amazing autistic person!

  • Your inclusion of 'I need time to process questions', just gave me an insight!

My dad used to accuse me of "thinking up a lie" when I was actually trying to process the question.

Wow. That's why that bit went so badly,so consistently...

  • I am glad my comment gave you an insight. It’s sad that your dad used to make assumptions about you when you were just processing his words. Now you have this knowledge, hopefully you won’t have assumptions made about you. Autistic discovery is so important, life changing. It makes you re - evaluate everything through a newly realised autistic lens.

    An important moment of reflection.
