« We don’t need a cure for autism, only for ignorance »

Hi, I just watched this amazing talk from an autistic person and I wanted to share it- my favourite quote is « We don’t need a cure for autism, only for ignorance »

Watching this has made me wonder whether I should start telling more people about being autistic for the sake of raising awareness about autism. I think so many difficulties could be avoided if there was a better understanding of and greater openness towards difference in society (and not just autism but differences of any kind), but sadly there seems to still be a lot of stigma.

  • Oh I do just that. Loud and proud.

Mind you I'm getting on a bit in age and if I was ever that bothered what anyone else thought of me personally, I'm really not now. But I am aware that by disclosing that about myself and asking for the things I need and explaining why, say at work, I might be changing someone's perception for the better as to what Autism can look like in an older woman and open minds a bit for the benefit of the next Autistic person they encounter. And actually, I have had a couple of people thank me for doing that because it helped them understand better how to understand their next Autistic client.
