Hello I am wondering if anyone has encountered problems with council tax benefit - Cheshire East Council. Both my adult sons have been exempt from paying Council Tax previously. This year the GP's completed the Exemption Certificates, but Cheshire East Council now say that my eldest son has to pay £200 toward his council tax. The younger son does not have to. The elder son is on the low rate of DLA and the younger one on the middle rate. One GP charged £16 for a signature and the other GP did not charge us. Cheshire East inform us that there are guidelines that GP's should not charge for this completing these forms. Is this an income generating device that we will have to pay for every year, as I imagine the GP's may have more paperwork.
My eldest son has suffered hardship as a result of having to find £200, which he paid up front as he was afraid of receiving a summons for non payment. I have canvassed my MP, but I wondered if other people had experienced problems. I am struggling to find help my elder son as he has a limited amount to live on and this is a huge amount for him to find, considering he has been exempt previously.
I would be welcome to hear anyones views or any advice there is.
Thank you. Lorna
