James Webb telescope...Isn't space amazing! However...

Evening everyone,

I was amazed by the new photos from NASA's James Webb telescope that were unveiled today. Alongside these images were graphs and data about things such as water vapour around certain celestial body's and what that might mean with regards to life elsewhere in space.

However surely the billions of pounds that were put into this project would be better off being used to look after all life on Earth? Like I say the pictures are quite stunning but when looked alongside the wondrous views we have of life on our planet I know which pictures I'd prefer to look at.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on the matter?

  • Its a tough one. I take your point, but on the other hand it may be wishful thinking to think that money not spent on X automatically goes to Y. Also, 99% of everything that ever existed on Earth is extinct. Even  if we go that way too, the planet itself will be fine without us. A couple of centuries and nature will reclaim everything. In the meantime, evolutionary trajectory is politely showing us the door. Initially, ‘upwards’ to the stars, then when the limits of how far out there we can get are reached, we replicate that on a smaller scale with the technology discovered on the way: escaping these bodies and becoming something more. When I say we, I mean they - we will be long dead, and they will be functionally immortal.

But first, discovery must pace its trajectory at the right speed: the title of this thread shows us how (two factions of thought), its just the ratios that shift.

  • I am rather naive when it comes to money and how it is 'distributed' by governments, councils etc. Actually I'm rather naive generally. It was wishful thinking on my part!

  • I am too tbh, but I kind of catch it in myself and hold it to account. And then fail to learn anthing new! More and more these days Im comfortable with not knowing something about socio-economics or political intricacies (NT brains seem to soak up all those fractals much more effectively) and saying so. Its not wilful ignorance, just prioritising what I want spend time ruminating on while my personal death clock  ticks ever louder.

  • All my family are NT and do seem to soak, and want to soak up all this information.
