hello

hi i'm new to this group and would value any advice. My 9yr old son started with high anxiety and panic attackss end of last yrs summer hols was referred to camhs where hes been having weekly sessions with a cbt thereapist. She picked up on the fact his anxiety could b due tp him being on the spectrum (something i'd never thought of but since reading up he shows lots of traits to aspergers!). Hes really struggled at school and is only pn a reduced timetable at present. We got reffered to consultant at camhs in april who said he wanted a duagnosis done straight away! Since this ed phydc has alsp got involved and has influenced consultant. We had a multi agency meeting yesterday which hads left both my husband and i in dispair. Both ed physc and consultant want to leave a diagnosis at the moment to see if the new stratergies (asd stratergies) help redue his anxieties andvreconvine in oct to see how hes settled into his new year (he wont cope nevet has). Feel so fustrated they're all saying they dont want to e out an asd but arent doing any tests at present. His therrapist who sees him on a weekly basis is convinced hes pn the spectrum. We don't know what to do, not sure if to just wait (although the fact they were saying he has 2 yrs till secondary so have plenty of time worries me!) or go privately or back to the drs to be reffered to consultant at hospital. Very concerend that the ed physc hss admitted she doesnt like labelling (who does u only eant a label so that a childs needs are met appropriatly).

  • Our diagnosis came   from the paediatrition once he had  been seen by her,- camhs and the speech and language therapist.  They had a group meeting  and decided  that they all agreed he has asd and that was it.  What frustrated us was the length of time it took waiting in between the appointmments and the lack of explanation about how the process worked.

We  looked into going private but were advised that a private diagnosis woud not necessarily be recognised by the local authority and ultimately might slow us down in terms of getting help/schooling etc.  However you dont need a diagnosis to get a statement of special needs and this is really worthwhile doing. It takes 26 weeks so best to start now. Its better if the request comes from school but you can do it yourself.  Contact parent partnership for help and advice.

  • Hi Mary, thanks for response. Its so fustrating feel like its a constant round of meetings with no answers and more meetings msfe!! Who gave ur son his diagnosis in the end? Not sure if to wait to see what happens or what to do. Its so annoying how these professionals just dont get how it affects the family. You just need answers and sorry but a diagnosis does make a difference and i dont neef patronising in being told i shouldnt just b focusing on a diagnosis!!!! Its so cruel!!!!

  • Makes perfect sense becaus I have been there.  I actually asked an ed psych when my son was 8 if he might be on the spectrum and was told no.  Now five years on and masses of heartache ... fully diagnosed and in a special school.

Arrgh their attitude makes me so mad! My advice - get a statement of special needs, get him out of mainstream and into s apecial school where they understand ASD.  We have done this but its taken a year of awfulness at school followed by depression and anxiety, camhs involvement and finally diagnosis at age 13.

  • sorry about typos on my phone hope it makes sense!!!!
