Help with school

Hello,

I am new to this community and at my wits end with my children secondary school.

I have children, my 2nd oldest was diagnosed at the beginning of the year with autism. He is 14. Since then my eldest has been referred and my third child is showing indicators. My youngest is still in primary and just had a dyslexia diagnosis with a recommendation for an asd referral.

I had no clue my son could be autistic as all four have the same characteristics, so I really don't know what I'm doing.

Anyway, he is abt to finish year 9 and has a great mentor at school. However the rest of the school is a nightmare.

The sensory overload is too much for him. The senco was meant to write up a plan following a meeting in March, I'm still waiting for it, despite repeated requests.

If his mentor is not in he is left to his own devices and I can barely keep him in school. I was told he couldn't have an education healthcare plan, so that was ruled out.

I don't know what I'm meant to be asking for or what I'm entitled to.

He has constant in school and online bullying that not dealt with. His tutor never replies to emails.

In fact I barely get a response from anyone.

Any advice as to how to deal with the school would be helpful. I don't know what I'm really asking for, but I feel like it's getting harder and harder to keep him in school and they are doing little to help make it easier for him

  • You say you were "told he couldn'thave an EHCP "  -  have you actually contacted the SEN team at the local authority and made a parental request for an assessment?  You do not need to wait for the school,  If the authority refuses  you can approach the SENDTribunal - I would recommend getting advice from NAS, IPSEA  or another professional adviser.

You say his tutor is not answering emails. Have you tried escalating to the Head of Year? If necessary complain to the  Head Teacher. If you are still getting nowhere contact the Chair of Governors.  Ask the school office to send you a copy of the complaints policy, or it shouled be on the school website.

If bullying has not been addressed, ask to speak to the Safeguarding Lead and follow up in writing (email or letter.)  You can also contact the Head of Education Safeguarding at the local authority. The last resort is to contact Ofsted and say that the school is not dealing with bullying and probable disability discrimination. Usually if you tell the Head Teacher that you are going to go to Ofsted this has the desired effect!

As always, I suggest you contact NAS, a disability adviser or IPSEA.

Check if your house insurance comes with  a legal advice service - sometimes you can get a free consultation with a solicitor. If you are working, does your union have a legal advice service?  Or try the CAB.
