Annoying special interest

My friend has a very intense special interest and it's constant messages about it, conversations about it, pictures of it. I don't mind listening for a little while but we can never seem to have a normal conversation without them closing it off and focusing back on their interest, so I can never discuss anything in the real world with them before I'm dragged back into fantasy land. If I try and tell them nicely it's getting a little tiring and I'd like to move to something else they get VERY upset. What can I do to sort this out? It's becoming exhausting. (I'm very gentle about letting them know it gets a little tiring when I try to)

  • Continue doing what you're doing. I think you've already adopted the best strategy sometimes it just takes a lot of time. It wouldn't hurt if this friend of yours had some friends who share his interest. Maybe than he wouldn't feel compelled to talk to you about it all the time. But I'm guessing you are one of few friends he has.
