Favourite Words

So I have always loved reading and wondered if anyone had a favourite word or phrase?

I read a lot of historical fiction so my favourites tend to be of a bygone era. I love the word melancholic. I also love the word apothecary. I can't tell you why but I just love the sound of them in my head. If I say them out loud it doesn't sound the same though. Weird.

I love words that really capture the essence of their meaning so that you instantly get a strong image just from reading them. Words often get stuck in my head, which I suppose is a bit like mental echolalia (a new favourite of mine ha ha).

Would be interested to see if anyone else feels likewise.

  • I don't really have a favourite word or phrase, though in recent years like the word reverie both for the word sound and the meaning - ideal for autistic people who are lost in their own wonderful world in their mind.    Also recently, perseveration - which is something autistic people can struggle with, which is getting stuck on the same thing or thoughts usually needing help to stop.

I always get stuck on mishap, which my brain always wants to pronounce it as mish-ap.

Another word that just sprung to mind is truckle (small barrel shape cheese) - amusing, like chuckle.

  • Perseveration - I'd never heard that word before even though I now recognise I do that all the time. And you made me smile with mish-ap.
