Autism during the 1970s and 80s

Hi! Apologies if this is too much.

One of my special interests is history and I'm currently working towards a history degree, I got diagnosed two years ago and I'm still learning more about myself every day, one rabbit hole I'm considering for my main project is possibly doing Autism.

In particular, I'm possibly considering looking at societal attitudes towards Autism from the 1970s to as late as possible in the 90s. I want to look at how people reacted and adjusted to the system, possibly the process of diagnosis, both formal and self-diagnosed. I could look at general experiences and daily experiences and why some people got it and others didn't.

Maybe look at media portrayal and how autism was portrayed in films, like Rain Man, and how that influenced public perception as well as any other shows, like talk shows or interviews and the like which may have discussed it.

One possible avenue I can take is taking a look at Britain and Ireland. I would like too, but I'm kind of at a loss at where should I go?

Can anyone recommend me any pretty influential interviews or shows around this period with featured autism, (My Autism and Me comes to mind but that's sadly not in the timeframe I'm looking at)

Is there any good newspapers that could help me with this topic? Or any experts who specialized in the field or for anyone who grew up during this period relay their experience on the matter?

Does the NSA have any records considering they were among the first Autism-friendly charities, especially in the UK and Ireland?

- thanks for your time, let me know. thanks.
