Speech and running away

If and when a child with autism talks, does the understanding of not to run away click with the child

If I go out he's fine in the town, but when I enter a shop he sprints away wanting to press buttons, get at a till, sprint round and round the shop. Today he got out of the trolley when I was paying for groceries. He just will not listen when I say no, it's like he's determine to do this. He then lies on the ground to make it harder for me to pick him up.

Any advice on what to do

  • I used to do this in shops and when walking in the street. I used to be amazed by everything and wanted to explore, got a bit dangerous because when cars were coming I wanted to run in the road and touch them.

My mum got a child harness/leash for me. It doesn't hurt and your son will still be able to move away just not as far. This worked really well for me so my mum says. So I suggest that, maybe get one and see how he gets on with it.
