films/series with autistic characters?

hiya,

strange question and I'm sure it's probably been asked before but i couldn't find it.

can anyone think of films/series which have characters with ASD?

for example, Sam from Atypical, Raymond from Rain Man, Shaun from the good doctor...

thanks xx

  • Yes, I think your right. The brilliant Alun Armstrong.

  • Maybe Brian "Memory" Lane in "New Tricks"?

  • This is a good one!

  • The film Little Voice with Jane Horrocks is one that I always wonder about, she can mimic so well and go into meltdowns. People manipulate her and she is able to zone out.

  • Also I think Young Sheldon is far superior to The Big Bang Theory. There is no laugh track, the characters are great, the child actors are brilliant, I think it's funnier, the storylines are really quite poigniant, Dr Sturgess is a great additional autistic character, it's very chill and easy to watch and doesn't feel as sit-com like as The Big Bang Theory.

  • There's a TV show called Bones (murder mystery) alot of the characters on that come across as autistic, especially the main female character. It is a bit dated though.

  • Always thought Forest Gump had to be autistic.

  • There is a character in the Channel 4 soap/drama series 'Hollyoaks' who is autistic, and in real life too. I'm unable to think of any other TV or film characters that haven't already been mentioned.

  • Newt from Fantastic Beasts. He is who many of us could be if we were helped to become our best self. Minus the magic!  And then Luna from the Harry Potter series. 2 amazingly written and portrayed characters.

  • Erin in The Office US has some female autistic traits. Dwight seems possibly Asperges to me too

  • Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory but that may be too obvious. Not sure if anything is obvious with autism?

  • I watched a film last night that came across autistic, Baby Driver.  PTSD I think

  • There is a new television series on Amazon Prime called "As We See It", about three American roommates who are on the Autism spectrum.

  • Yes one I've seen is Pablo which is a childrens tv show where the character has autism. He creates imaginary friends and together they go on adventures and they help him with his anxiety and stressful situations.

I'm an adult but I do watch it for myself. I love childrens tv shows but find this one really helpful for myself as well. You can learn a lot from it. My daughter seems to like it as well so we both enjoy it together.

  • The Imitation Game (Alan Turing biopic), The Accountant, and The Night Clerk are all ones I've watched recently, all recommended to me by Netflix (the algorithm appears to be offering me lots of films with autistic lead characters!). The Imitation game was excellent but quite sad if you know some of his story. I don't think they mentioned autism but they used a load of common stereotypes to make sure the audience were in no doubt. Other than that I really enjoyed it.
