Anyone else glued to their computer screen tonight, digging out that elusive ancestor?

If you are as obsessed as I am, you might be too glued to even notice this post , lol.

I just found my 2xG grand father, Patrick McNally and after a two decade wait find out he was born in 1853 in Greenlough, co Derry. Oh wow a lead on his baptism. FINALLY! Woo...wooo...wooo. My cousins will be so happy.

What were your finds?

    :-) and a lot further back than that.  Work birth to the marriage to the birth.  That's the key.  So your birth cert has your parents names, so you find the marriage, which has their father's names and their ages, which leads you to the birth etc... Meanwhile, the census from now 1921 back to 1841 will give you a 10 year snap shot of the whole family.

    Oh Brill.  You got military information out of it too.  Has that now lead you to his service record?

    As for the cost, yeah... they do that initially to recuperate the scanning and transcription costs.  Give it a year or too and it'll be under our normal subscriptions, I dare say.  For now, I'm just tracking the grand and gg parents, so only a few quid.

  • Oh cool that's interesting. I didn't know you could find out about past relatives that far back. I'll look in to it and see what I can dig up. Not sure how to do it actually but I'll try to work it out.

  • wow that’s brilliant! I found out that My maternal great great grandfather served in the Royal Navy in ww1. I found his service number and a list of ships that he was on. Also found out that in 1921 my great grandfather (who was only two at the time) was living in a small house with his mother, father, aunties and uncles and grandparents! We even have the address that they were at and the house is still standing today less than 5 minutes away from my house. I’m glad I’m not the only one who enjoys family history. I am annoyed that we have to pay £3.50 a census for our own family history. It’s a bit expensive really but I’ve been waiting years to find this information out!
