finding meaning

anyone else find this but

i always feel as though i need a specific meaning in everything that i do and i need clarity in what my overall meaning of life is otherwise what is the point.

my meaning for things could even be to be happy.

i feel as though the inherent meaning of life is to be happy and ultimately, whilst life might feel like a competition, it actually isn't because it's all your perspective and if you're doing better in life but you're unhappier then you're not exactly "winning".

it hurts my heart seeing people just do stuff, feeling unhappy, not enjoying life.

i feel as though every day must have some sort of meaning to it or just what's the point?

i agonised over death for so long before coming to the conclusion that death is just simply another adventure and that death makes life all the more worthwhile and that you must make the most of each day.

i don't know if that made any sense

  • This makes total sense. I can really relate to the people who are seen as a "success" in life because they have got good jobs and promotions and nice houses but they all seem totally stressed and misrable from the crazy workload they have and the endless promotions they have to go for just to prove their career is going forward.
Thats not happy. The guy who drives round in a beat up camper van, wears second hand clothes and doesnt have a pot to pee in is probobly happier than them.

You sound like someone who feels emotions deeply and cares about other people, I am exactly the same.

I find my faith comforts me a lot and gives me meaning in life. It makes my life make sense even if the rest of the world doesnt

I also find the more time I spend in nature the more the world makes sense. Look at a duck, they dont care about jobs, or status or politics, as long as they have water to swim in and someone gives them bread they are happy.

I wish we could be more like the animals

  • Hi autileaf. I think it's a mistake to look for an inherent meaning of life. Firstly, as a point of formal logic, to do so would suggest that 'life' and 'meaning' are bound together by necessity, and there's no evidence of that, nor any possible way to ever prove it. How could one ever demonstrate that 'meaning'- the subjective assignment of value- can ever be inherently part of life? Inherent relationships don't rely on this.

Let me make a suggestion to you. When one views a flower, is there any inherent reason to recognize its beauty? How about when one is delighted by children's laughter? Or by the elegance of a sonnet? In all these scenarios, the meaning is only the given one- that these things improve human flourishing. That is enough.

We might be born into a losing battle, but that shouldn't cause you any sorrow. And what you say about death is quite true, I think- death does give any life its flavour. However, that doesn't mean that we shouldn't hold out as long as we can.

  • There's no explanation as to why life is the way it is, other than others not accepting responsibility.

Nowadays, Adults expect to be 'Taken Care of' by the State. The Zeitgeist of today is 'Stop Loss' rather than examine what's fundamentally wrong.

Also, those who learned a trade fare better as Adults than those who went to Uni. However, we're made to believe that Uni is a Birth-Right. Again, too much entitlement.

Cities have lost their character, while Rural Areas are drastically underserved; in terms of amenities. Though, having said that, the Country-Folk are resourceful; and can survive - even if driven underground. Believers must embrace persecution.
