The big question ?

Is there a political resource agreement between NAS and Westminister to only treat wheelchair autism and only give the side of Aspergers autism a song and dance PR resource system.

?

Any thoughts,, for one I feel I have an invisible condition to the care authorities and the NAS has no backbone or life changing resources to assist me.

THIS IS THE REALITY ON THE GROUND !!! NAS

It is arguably hardest being 'high functioning'.  People call people with Aspergers 'mild' - they have obviously not lived with the condition then!

I could not have said it better my self, just because we have Aspergers does not mean we are mild.

  • The NAS will be the Aspergers national champion ! NOT !

  • There just isn't a complete understanding of Asperger's. For many people the actual diagnosis is only initiated by the person with Asperger's. In my case I was responsible for first researching the condition then presenting my findings to the Doctors. I think that people with Asperger's have particular skills that make it very hard for people to accept that they find other things difficult (things that NT's find easy).

More research into Asperger's would be helpful. Followed by dissemination of the information.

Too often there is a focus on 'the symptoms' without looking at why. Someone might think 'Asperger's, they need routine', that may be correct but the person hasn't a clue 'why?' and does not even consider asking the question. Without the deeper understanding then how is anyone ever going to understand?

  • Don't expect anyone to agree with this but I've found that myself and my son are "too high functioning" Aspergers, i.e. we appear to deal with ourselves and life very well hence do not qualify for any help but dealing with ourselves and with life drives us flippin crazy. Sometimes I think it would be easier to be more low functioning. As we are we get passed onto mental health who pass us back to autism outreach who say they are not medically trained and pass us back to mental health.... We are not mad, bad evil, or even ill - just do not fit into (and have no wish to) fit into "conventional" society.

If you work hard at explaining yourself, appearing 'typical', struggling to fit in then you are seen to be 'coping'. There is no recognition of the effort and stress involved. It takes its toll. If there was greater acceptance and understanding of the differences between Aspergers and NT then that would make things easier.

Jon @ spot on ! I struggle and then my struggling comes across as coping then I can't leave the house for days afterwards, IBS, isolation and vulnerabilty sets in. The Doctor calls it hidding your condition by half-coping mechanisms.

Truecolors @ TV public imaging consensus has done no favours for us. As they do not show the downside aspects of aspergers,, strange how the word ASPECTS relates to aspergers autism, sounds familiar. Those aspects of autism flux in and out the condition making day to day living hard.

  • JON, I agree and even that negative impact is controlled via ghetto living, hospitals, care centres and hospices, you would think that some two week to live cancer patients would go speak to the scum authorities, but even they are given death chemo to weaken there bodies quicker and given anti-psychotics to stop them challenging the system at there death.

  • Lack of understanding regarding 'hidden impairments' seems to be very commmon within  society. Unless someone is actually having an obvious negative impact upon 'society' or they are at a 'crisis' point - where it would reflect badly on the 'society' if they were ignored - then the 'society' is happy for you to just 'get on' and 'exist'. If you give up quietly then that possibly suits 'society'.
