support dogs for asd and aspergers?

Hi everyone, we are a animal loving family, and during our search for a new dog to join us we have worries of which type of dog to get. We are pretty settled on a labrador as these are the dogs used as sipport dogs but, can you train sipport dogs yourself? Has anyone done this? The demand for support dogs is very high and recieving a support dog is difficult. Any chat on this wpould be great.

  • Thanks kitkat, we have a chinese crested dog at the moment but she is more my dog she isnt really a breed you would think for support especially as she hides behind me when he has any meltdown or loud period. The idea of getting a dog more specifically for him was to give him support out and about, but with so many places not allowing dogs, without a support dog tabard/training it wouldnt be as supportive as we would like.
