support dogs for asd and aspergers?

Hi everyone, we are a animal loving family, and during our search for a new dog to join us we have worries of which type of dog to get. We are pretty settled on a labrador as these are the dogs used as sipport dogs but, can you train sipport dogs yourself? Has anyone done this? The demand for support dogs is very high and recieving a support dog is difficult. Any chat on this wpould be great.

  • Hi WillsMom,

Maybe you could get advice from this organisation (Dogs for the Disabled, based in Banbury)? They have two services: (1) providing trained support dogs, and (2) helping parents get the most out of the family dog to help their autistic child(ren) (Parents Autism Workshops and Support):www.dogsforthedisabled.org/.../

    They run workshops across England.

Hope that is of some help to you, and good luck! We have a red setter, who is a lovely gentle and patient dog, and our son, who has Aspergers, loves him. We haven't tried any training specifically to help our son, as our dog was a rescue one, only came to us recently, and is still on his basic training! However, our son does like to stroke him and speak to him, and it definitely makes him happy and calmer. I have to say that I find the dog a comfort too, when I've had a trying day with meltdowns etc!
