What's the weather like to live with outside the SE? (1st world problem)

What's it like living in the Welsh or SW English countryside (especially with respect to the weather)? I was raised in Australia, so don't really have a "feel" for the UK climate outside of London (and some remote parts of Scotland).

I want to move out of the SE and find a secluded/quiet/neighbour-free house with lots of trees. Where should I go?

I like Wales and the Welsh and it seems to be the only place in the South where you can live amongst trees (well at my budget anyway). I'm quite waterproof, but she who must be obeyed is concerned about the weather in Wales - particularly the amount of rain... most months have >1mm rain for ~15 days! How does it affect your life?

Similarly she is reluctant to go past say Sheffield to the North due to the temperature.

I've been checking out the UK climate maps, and Wales seems to have a similar amount of rain as Devon & Cornwall (home to the optimistically named "English Riviera"!?).
